Guwahati: A day after EastMojo reported a case of alleged sexual assault on the campus of Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) by the institute’s “senior” students, Kamrup police on Saturday arrested one student under rape charges.

Responding to questions sent by EastMojo, an IIT-G spokesperson on Saturday said that sexual harassment and assault cases on the campus are duly handled by the institute’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and Students’ Disciplinary Committee (SDC) on receipt of the complaints by the victim or other sources promptly.

As reported earlier, the alleged accused and his four friends were questioned by the institute’s ICC. Police sources said at least five students were detained for questioning in the case on Saturday.

Superintendent of Police, Kamrup, Hitesh Ch Roy, said, “Five people have been questioned so far. One of them will be booked under section 376 of the IPC.”

The IIT-G spokesperson, however, denied any arrests were made on Saturday.

“The case is now subjudice, and the police is conducting an independent investigation and the institute is cooperating with them. The police have not made any arrests yet,” the spokesperson said.

Sources, however, have told EastMojo that the victim has recorded her statement with the Magistrate and that the institute has ensured her safety and prevention of harassment in any form.

“While five students were summoned, the police has arrested one student so far, as no evidence of sexual assault was found on the other four boys.”

“IIT-G will, however, take action against the four boys as they were allegedly involved in ragging and other forms of harassment,” the source added.

An undergraduate student at IIT-G has alleged sexual assault by unknown seniors of the institute after she was found unconscious outside her hostel late on Sunday evening. The victim was taken to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) at about 1.30 am on March 29.

IIT-Guwahati issued a statement on Saturday, saying: “An unfortunate incident involving a female student was brought to the notice of the institute on March 28, 2021. The institute acted promptly, and the student was rushed to the Institute hospital where she was examined and was advised to go to Guwahati Medical College (GMC) for necessary medical examination.”

One of the accused in the case.

The student was transported to GMC in the Institute ambulance accompanied by her friends, the institute said. “Later, the hostel warden also joined them at the hospital and has been constantly in touch with the hospital authorities as well as the family of the student.”

The student is now safe and is recovering well, IIT-G said.

“The student and her guardians were informed that they could file an FIR, which they have refused presently as they want institute to take up the case.”

The IIT-G statement added that a fact finding committee, which was constituted on March 29, submitted its report to the institute on April 2, based on which the institute has filed an FIR.
