Guwahati: Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh urged people of Assam to vote for a government that upholds the Constitution of India and the principles of democracy, for a government that cares for every citizen, of every community.

Addressing the denizens of Assam via a video message, the veteran Congress leader expressed gratitude to the state for enabling him to serve the country, as for 28 years, from 1991 to 2019, he represented Assam in the Rajya Sabha. During this period, Dr Singh served as the Union Finance Minister for 5 years and as Prime Minister of India for 10 years.

The former PM said, “Once again, the time has come for you to cast your ballot in the Vidhan Sabha Election. you must vote wisely. The people of Assam, have endured terrible sufferings through a long period of insurgency and unrest. Under the leadership, of Late Tarun Gogoi from 2001 to 2016, Assam made a new beginning towards peace and development. However, it is now facing very serious setbacks.”

Society is being divided on the basis of religion, culture and language, and basis rights of the common man are being denied, said Dr Singh, highlighting that there is an atmosphere of tension and fear.

In an evoking statement, the 88-year-old politician said, “You must vote for a Government that upholds the Constitution of India and the principles of democracy. You must vote for a Government that will care for every citizen, of every community. You must vote for a Government that will ensure inclusive growth. You must vote for the Government that will put Assam on the path of peace and development, once again.”

Talking about Congress’ five guarantees in Assam, he firmly stated that the Assam Congress has prepared a ‘Jan Manifesto’ with assurances that are practical, and these will lead the state onto a path of prosperity.
