Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Guwahati expelled one of its students on March 10 over a social media post from 2020 on the JEE exam scam.

The student, identified as Vikrant Singh, has been expelled for one semester by the institute over a Facebook post written by him in October 2020.

The social media post that got Singh expelled is about the JEE (Mains) examination scam that shook the state last year. In his post, Singh wrote, “We students spent our wellbeing, and whatnot to secure a rank. It is the lives and dreams of Young Students that are at stake. It’s good that these culprits were nabbed, but we need more strict rules to crack into this Unfair Businesses.”

In his post, Singh also mentioned how the conduct of exams by major institutes was flawed, and ironically, how everyone trying to ‘expose’ the flaws gets shut down by authorities.

The suspension letter issued to Singh by IIT Guwahati dated March 10, 2021, states: “You are expelled from the Institute with effect from 10.03.2021 to 27.07.2021.”

The letter also states that Singh has been expelled for his “indulgence in misinterpretation of facts related to the institute without proper verification and resulting in defamation of the institute.”

In a fresh post dated March 13, however, Singh wrote: “I just sent my representation against a completely illegal order of expulsion till 27/07/2021 by Prof. T G Sitharam. I have sent my representation to the Board of Governors of IIT Guwahati, Chairman of IIT Council, Secretary to Ministry of Education, Hon’ble President of India, Secretary to the President of India and to the Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Guwahati. I have also requested for disciplinary action against Prof. T G Sitharam for severely victimizing me and disciplinary proceeding against Dr. Gaurav Trivedi for victimizing me by repeatedly lodging false complaints against me. Be assured that I will fight against this injustice. I thank everyone who have been supporting me in my fight against injustice. Research scholars have been victimized in almost every academic/research Institutions. People like us must fight against injustice towards research scholars.”

EastMojo tried to get in touch with officials at IIT Guwahati for an official response, but calls to the institute’s public relations officer went unanswered. The story will be updated as soon as we receive a response from IIT authorities.
