Tinsukia: A day after the Election Commission of India announced poll dates in Assam, the police on Saturday arrested the now suspended Assam BJP leader Dipanjali Kakoty Moran in connection with assaulting a police official in Tinsukia in November last year.

Despite the criminal assault charges, Kakoty was also recently appointed as a member of the newly formed Moran Autonomous Council.

Meanwhile, the ruling-BJP maintained Kakoty was suspended as executive member of the party soon after the case surfaced in November.

BJP state vice-president Pulok Gohain told EastMojo, “The party will take an appropriate call once the case comes to a logical conclusion, depending on the outcome.”

“I am not in a position to comment on her appointment as a member of Moran Autonomous Council,” Gohain added.

A day after election dates were announced for the poll-bound state, Kakoty’s arrest comes as a major embarrassment for the ruling saffron party.

Officer-in-charge of Kakopathar police station Biraj Kumar Das told EastMojo that the accused was arrested from her residence at Kakopathar on Saturday.

“She had assaulted on-duty police officer inside the premises of Kakopathar police station in November last year, after which a complaint was filed against her by sub-inspector Apurba Das. The case was registered under section 294/448/332/427 of Indian Penal Code,” Das said.

A copy of the FIR filed in November, 2020.

Rubbishing the allegations of working under “political pressure” from Dispur, Das said the accused had sought anticipatory bail, which got cancelled by the court after police submitted the case diary.

On November 8 last year, Moran, an executive member of State BJP and resident of Dirak Powai, engaged in an altercation with sub-inspector Aupurba Das over the release of her driver Srikanta Phukan of Dirak Amguri who was allegedly wanted by police in connection with assault on a woman. She allegedly used abusive language and forcibly attempted to take out Phukan from the police station, and physically assaulted SI Das in the process.

In his police complaint, SI Das stated that on November 8, the accused entered the police station and tried to take away a person detained for questioning.

Muk china nai, moi CM or manuh (Don’t you know me, I am an aide of CM). After this threat, the accused held the officer’s police uniform, tearing it, and injuring him as he tried to stop her,” police sources said.
