The Election Commission of India on Friday announced the schedule for Assam Legislative Assembly Elections 2021. Addressing a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said polls for the 126-member Assam Assembly will be held in three phases, on March 27, April 1 and April 6. The results will be announced on May 2.

Assam Assembly Election schedule:

First phase

Issue of notification – March 2

Last date of nomination – March 9

Scrutiny of nomination – March 10

Last date of withdrawal of nomination – March 12

Date of poll – March 27

Date of counting of votes – May 2

Second phase

Issue of notification – March 5

Last date of nomination – March 12

Scrutiny of nomination – March 15

Last date of withdrawal of nomination – March 17

Date of poll – April 1

Date of counting of votes – May 2

Third phase

Issue of notification – March 12

Last date of nomination – March 19

Scrutiny of nomination – March 20

Last date of withdrawal of nomination – March 22

Date of poll – April 6

Date of counting of votes – May 2

The CEC said the term of the current Assam Assembly expires on May 31 and the poll process in the northeastern state has to be completed by that date.

According to the CEC, out of the total 126 Assembly seats in Assam, eight are reserved for the Scheduled Castes candidates and 16 for Scheduled Tribes.

There are a total of 33,530 polling stations in Assam this year, an increase of 34.71 per cent over the last elections in 2016.

The CEC further announced that voting will be allowed for an extra one hour in view of the coronavirus pandemic.
