Sudhanshu Dhulia appointed as new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court
The Central Government has notified the appointment of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
Until now, Gauhati HC Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh was the acting Chief Justice since September 20, 2020, following the retirement of the previous Chief Justice Ajai Lamba.
A notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice said, "In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office."
In December 2020, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the appointment of Justice Dhulia as the new Chief Justice of the Gauhati HC.
Justice Dhulia, the second senior judge of Uttarakhand High Court completed LLB in 1986. He initially practised before the Allahabad High Court, then shifted to the newly-created High Court of Uttarakhand where he was appointed as the first Chief Standing Counsel of the Government and later as Additional Advocate General, and was designated as Senior Advocate in June 2004, said LiveLaw.
He was appointed as a permanent judge of Uttarakhand High Court in 2008.
