Gauhati High Court denies bail to Akhil Gogoi

The NIA had filed a case against Gogoi under Sections 18 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

The Gauhati High Court on Thursday rejected the bail application of Akhil Gogoi, in jail since December 2019, in connection with a National Investigation Agency (NIA) case, for his role in the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protests in Assam.

The court's decision has put speculations of Gogoi taking part in upcoming state elections to rest.

Gogoi's lawyer said they would approach the Supreme Court against the decision. He added that he was yet to get a copy of the order.

The NIA had filed a complaint against Gogoi under Sections 18 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The indictment alleges links between him and his organization with Maoist terrorists, based on the testimony of two anonymous witnesses.
