Bird flu: Assam Zoo bans poultry meat

The Ministry of Environment has advised the Center to take adequate measures to control the spread of bird flu

Guwahati: The Assam Zoo will not be using poultry meat in light of the bird flu outbreak, officials confirmed.

The Ministry of Environment has advised the Central government to take adequate measures to control bird flu. It has issued special instructions to the state government following the outbreak of bird flu in five states.

Although bird flu has not been reported in Assam so far, special precautionary measures are already being taken. Zoo authorities have informed the doctors that they are providing alternative meat.

Talking to EastMojo, Tejas Mariswamy, Director, Assam State Zoo, said that instead of poultry meat, they will be using mutton and beef for the time being.

The Union Ministry of Environment has urged all states to take adequate measures to control bird flu. It has also called on the Centre to report the number of deaths of migratory birds. The state government has also called for monitoring of migratory bird habitats and reservoirs.

The sale of poultry has already been banned in many states. Assam has taken all precautionary measures against the effects of bird flu to prevent it from spreading to humans, said Atul Borah, Minister of State for Animal Husbandry.
