Watch: Sanitation workers protest demanding regularisation of jobs
Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Karmi Sangha (GMKS), the association of sanitation workers employed by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, are on a two-day strike demanding regularisation of their jobs, among other issues.
The workers also demanded pension-related issues and the promotion of GMC employees as per seniority and eligibility by clearing all loopholes of existing staffing pattern of the Corporation.
The Sangha had decided to go on a two-hour sit-in demonstration on December 30 and 31. The GMC workers resorted to peaceful protests after the government and the higher authorities of the GMC did not respond to their demands even after repeated requests.
"We are prepared to take further actions if the authorities do not respond to peaceful demonstrations. We have written letters to the GMC Commissioner and even to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal regarding our issues, but received no response," said Chandan Sarma, General Secretary, Guwahati Municipal Karmi Sangha (GMKS).
