Guwahati: Goalpara has seen a massive surge in cases of drug addiction among college students, according to the doctors of the mental health department at Goalpara Civil Hospital. The doctors revealed this information during a workshop aimed to train college teachers on Tuesday.
The programme was arranged under the National Mental Health Programme.
Dr Upamoy Nath, senior psychiatrist and program officer of the district mental health programmes said, “Besides other drugs, the addiction to heroin injection is very much there in Goalpara. Many people don’t know that the college students in a large-scale have fallen prey to this drug.”
He added, “Sometimes, they realise the consequences and come for treatment. Then they share their experiences of falling into the trap. First, they try one or two times with their friends, but slowly it results in addiction. Addiction ultimately leads to mental illnesses. This is particularly seen in the teenage group.”
The joint director of health services, Dr Abhijit Basu, emphasised on the identification and treatment of mental illness during his speech.
Neuro-psychiatrist Dr Hrisikesh Kalita focused on the various aspects of neuro-psychiatry, including causes and ways of handling stress. Both the psychiatrists also imparted training on the symptoms of various mental problems.
Clinical psychologist Purnima Pegu and community health officer Sk. Khurshida Ahmed also delivered speeches during the programme.
Around 20 college teachers, along with several lawyers participated in the programme. Nagaon, Goalpara, Tinsukia, Darrang, Nalbari, Morigaon, Karbi Anglong and Karimganj districts of the state have already been covered under the NMHP scheme and all the MHP centers are located in the district civil hospitals.
