2020 JEE scam accused appeared for many students in the past, says Assam Police

Guwahati: Investigation into the Joint Entrance Examination (Mains) scam by the Assam police has revealed details about the inner workings of the proxy candidates’ racket.

Pradeep Kumar, who appeared in the JEE on behalf of Neel Nakshatra Das as a proxy candidate, was arrested in Delhi by a special team of the Assam police on Sunday.

During his interrogation, Kumar revealed that he charged Rs 6 lakh per candidate for appearing as proxy.

Kumar told investigators that Bhargav Deka, owner of Global Edulite, had taken Rs 20 lakh from Neel’s father Dr Jyotirmoy Das, who was arrested along with four others on Saturday.

Kumar revealed he shared a good relationship with Deka, which helped him appear as a proxy candidate for many students in Assam in the past. He appeared for many students in other parts of the country as well.

Kumar, an Electrical Engineering graduate from the Delhi School of Engineering, was also working at a Delhi-based coaching centre. A UPSC aspirant, Kumar was arrested from a flat in Ber Sarai in New Delhi on Sunday by a police team from the West Police District of Guwahati led by ADCP Supratibh Lal Baruah.
