In a recent update to the Joint Entrance Examination scam, the Guwahati Police had a breakthrough with the arrest of a prime accused Pradip Kumar in Delhi. Kumar appeared in the JEE on behalf of Neel Nakshatra Das as a proxy candidate.

“The proxy candidate was arrested from a flat in Ber Sarai, New Delhi on Sunday morning by a police team from West Police District of Guwahati. An ADCP-ranked official led the team,” Guwahati Police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta said in a media interaction.

The accused is on route to Assam after he was offered transit remand from a Delhi court where further investigation would take place. He will be produced in a court in Guwahati on Monday.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Kumar arrived in Guwahati two to three days ahead of the examination and then returned to Delhi the same day after appearing for the exam. Police officials added that Kumar charges a huge sum to sit as a proxy candidate in various examinations.

The scam came into focus after a recorded telephonic conversation of Neel Nakshatra Das- who topped the JEE exam from Assam, revealed to a friend that he never sat for the exam and that someone else appeared on his behalf.

Based on this lead, Azara police filed an FIR and arrested many, including Das, his father Jyotirmoy Das, Bhargav Deka- the owner of Global Eduilite, and some staff of TCS- who conducted the online entrance.
