WATCH: Royal Bengal tiger roams free in Tezpur; two injured

Forest officials suspect that the animal might have strayed out of either Kaziranga National Park, Nameri National Park or Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park

An adult Royal Bengal Tiger injured at least two people in Tezpur after it had strayed out of its habitat on Tuesday.

The incident took place in the Lichu Garden area in Napaam, Tezpur, which nearby from Tezpur University. According to sources, the tiger is still roaming free.

Forest officials rushed to the site, and according to the Kaziranga Field Director P Sivakumar, although the animal has not been caught yet, the situation is under control and the residents are being given full protection.

Speaking to EastMojo P Sivakumar said, "We have given the people full protection, and the tranqulisation team has already been deployed and are resting near the wetlands so that after a shot of a dart, the tiger falls in the wetland, otherwise if the animal runs away, it might cause further damage."

Sivakumar said that a team of veterinarians is accompanying the tranquilisation team and the situation is being monitored by the Divisional Forest Officer, Tezpur.

The forest officials suspect that the animal might have strayed out of either Kaziranga National Park, Nameri National Park or Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park.

"The tigers come to Tezpur every year, they might be migrating maybe from Nameri to Orang or say Kaziranga," he said, adding "Nameri, Orang, Kaziranga are tiger landscapes, so they migrate and in case of some disturbance they might miss their track and stray out."
