Guwahati: The demise of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday has come as a major loss for the political landscape in the state. The veteran leader, whose political career spanned over five decades, was remembered by leaders from across Northeast and outside.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “With his death, the State has lost an experienced, capable and efficient political leader. The people of Assam will always remember his committed service and contributions to the State.”

“His sense of humour, amiable and outspoken nature attracted everyone. He set high ethical values in the field of politics with his simple life-style and contributed profusely in strengthening democratic values in the country,” Sonowal added.

He tweeted, “Even though we were in Opposition parties, we shared a wonderful rapport and he was a guiding figure.”

Remembering Tarun Gogoi as “A tall leader, respected across party lines & adored for his immeasurable contributions towards the cause of Assam & the Northeast”, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said, “His demise will create a huge vaccum in the political arena of the NE.”

Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb said, “In his passing away, Assam has lost a senior leader and a veteran administrator.”

Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu, Mizoram CM Zoramthanga and Manipur CM N Biren Singh, Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio and Sikkim CM PS Golay also condoled the demise of Gogoi.
