This move will benefit students to open bank accounts as it was made mandatory for all students up to class XII to have their own bank accounts

Guwahati: Assam state government has announced that it will provide free Adhaar cards to school students from classes 1 to 12.

The process of distribution of the Aadhaar card has started from Monday under the Assam government and Axom Sarba Siksha Abhijan Mission.

The Adhaar enrollment process was been launched by the Principal Secretary of Education department B Kalyan Chakraborty.

This move will benefit students to open bank accounts as it was made mandatory for all students up to class XII studying in government and provincialised institutions in Assam.

The Aadhaar enrollment process was initiated under the purview of deputy commissioners in 27 districts.

The enrollment process in Kamrup Metro was set up at Kamrup Academy in Guwahati by Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu on Monday.

In Kamrup (Metro), the enrollment process will be carried out in 6 schools, 200 centres, and 22 panchayats.

“Bank account is to be opened for students from Class-I to XII of all categories of schools, including students of Special Training Centres, residential schools, KGBVs, model schools etc. It will be a massive exercise for the state. The whole exercise is to be completed by November 30, 2020,” said a letter sent by Samagraa Siksha, Assam MD B Kalyan Chakravarthy.

All students will get zero balance bank accounts. Students below the age of 10 will operate their account along with their guardians, while students above 10 years will have full control over their account.

Based on the decision, inspectors of schools and district elementary education officers, along with the district mission coordinator and district project coordinators of all districts of the state, have been directed to initiate necessary action.
