Assam will not ban firecrackers this Diwali

Following the National Green Tribunal notice, Odisha, Rajasthan, Delhi and Sikkim had banned firecracker sale

Ahead of the Diwali festival, Assam government has decided to not ban firecrackers. Earlier, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had issued a notice to ban firecrackers amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, in the interest of public health and environment.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice AK Goel sent a notice to 18 states and Union Territories Including Assam, Nagaland, and Meghalaya to expand the scope of hearing cases on pollution by firecrackers during Diwali, on Wednesday. This notice was issued following a petition by a NGO, Indian Social Responsibility Network.

The NGT also observed that Rajasthan and Odisha have already issued a notice to ban firecrackers this year. Following the order, states like Sikkim and Delhi have also banned firecracker this Diwali.

The Assam government has however refused to enforce a ban of firecrackers in Assam. Assam Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya in a statement said firecrackers won't be banned during Diwali, however, firecrackers that pollute the environment would not be allowed.
