Daring robbery at a State Bank of India ATM in the heart of Guwahati fails
Guwahati: Unidentified robbers attempted to break a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM using rods in Guwahati on Monday. In what seems to be a planned heist they first damaged the CCTV camera.
The ATM is located in the banks sixth-mile branch, which is barely 2 km away from the state secretariat and the high profile Dispur police station.
The miscreants used rods to break into the machine but failed to retrieve cash inside the machine. A passer-by noticed the damaged ATM and reported the same to bank officials.
"As I entered the ATM, I noticed that the lock in the machine had been damaged. It looked like somebody tried to open it forcefully," said Palash Upadhyay, who was the first to report the incident.
"I immediately informed the police, who along with bank officials, reached the scene," he added.
On being informed, police officials from Dispur police station arrived at the spot and initiated investigation.
"They have damaged a CCTV camera, but the other camera seems to be still working, so we will try to access the footage to identify the miscreants," said the police officer present at the spot.
Meanwhile, officials from the Six Mile branch of the bank have informed that this was the second attempted to break-in to the ATM in just two months. Onlookers also mentioned that the ATM had been targeted on several occasions in the past year.
