Guwahati: Keeping the ensuing Assam legislative assembly election, 2021 in mind, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), a farmer pressure group, has announced the formation of its new regional political party, “Raijor Dal” with the motto, “Raijei roja, raijok bosabo kune? raijei” (public is king, who will save the public?, the public itself) and has claimed of having support from at least 70 ethnic organisations, including Bir Lachit Sena of the state here on Friday.

This is the fourth newly launched party ahead of 2021 Assam assembly election. United Regional Party Assam, headed by leading advocate and social activist Anup Borbora, and several other organisations have offered support to the new outfit, reports claim.

Akhil Gogoi will hold the post of chief state convener of the party, reports say.

The decision of floating the new political party was announced at a press conference at the KMSS office at Gandhi Basti in Guwahati on Friday. With the announcement, KMSS leader such as Bhasco De Saikia, Hussain Mohammed Shahjahan, Anil Boro have resigned from their posts in the pressure group to join the newly founded political party.

“We have prepared ourselves to form a new political party. It will be a regional party. People from all tribes, caste, community, religion and language will be a part of this party,” KMSS president Bhasco De Saikia said.

The decision comes following the recent formation of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP)

Earlier, the KMSS had set September 20 as the deadline for the AASU, AJYCP and AJP to come on board to form a united regional political force in view of the coming assembly election.

The KMSS leadership had previously said that there could be differences of opinion when it comes to identifying with the formula of ‘one party and one symbol’. But, it said, “An initiative of unification is a prerequisite to defeat the ruling party along with the Congress-AIUDF coalition in the forthcoming election.”

The announcement of “Raijor Dal” comes a day after the National Investigative Agency (NIA) special court granted bail to Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi, in a case related to the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) stir in Assam last year.

The peasant leader was arrested on December 12 in 2019 for allegedly inciting violence during the anti-CAA protests. He was later handed over to NIA and a court here sent him to 10 days custody of the agency on December 17. He was taken to New Delhi the same day for questioning.

Gogoi was brought back to Guwahati on December 25 and has been in judicial custody ever since.
