Guwahati: The state government has re-constituted the State Level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB) with director general of police (DGP), Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, as its new chairman, along with additional DGP Harmeet Singh as member secretary and ADGP LR Bishnoi and IGP Hiren Nath as its members.
The decision was made a day after Pradip Kumar, a retired IPS officer, resigned from the post of chairman SLPRB, citing moral responsibility to Assam Police SI recruitment case. Kumar was in charge of the board for a long time.
“The board has been reconstituted with a view to ensure a transparent recruitment to the posts of sub-inspector in Assam Police,” the CM’s office said in a statement.
Usually, the ADGP or Special DG who is the head of the TAP (training and armed police) branch of Assam Police holds the post of the chairman of the SLPRB. However, Pradip Kumar was holding the charge post retirement.
Hiren Nath and Harmeet Singh were part of the previous board as well. However, according to Nath, he was never invited to attend any meeting of the board by the former chairman.
“The chief minister also asked the Board to conduct the examination in the most transparent manner and ensure that no anomaly takes place in the recruitment process,” the statement from the CM office added.
Sonowal further directed the Board to complete the written examination within November 20.
In another development in the investigation of the case, Assam Police has announced Rs 1 lakh cash reward each for anyone providing information about the whereabouts of alleged prime accused, former DIG PK Dutta and BJP leader Diban Deka, who have been at large since the scam surfaced.
Police has also sent out a lookout notice against the two who are considered as the prime accused in the SI (Unarmed Branch) recruitment examination question paper leak case. The notice has been sent to every state to ensure that they do not escape the country. “Police is also keeping a strict eye on the India-Nepal border, as PK Dutta’s son-in-law resides in that country,” DGP Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta said.
According to the police, it has been discovered upon inquiry that the chain through which the question paper was distributed via WhatsApp before the examination led to Dutta’s mobile phone from where it originated.
Interestingly, another accused Diban Deka has been on the run after facing interrogation at the CID headquarters in Guwahati. “Deka’s involvement in the scam came to light after the search operation carried out by the crime branch of Guwahati police at Thank You Lodge located at Ganeshguri here,” the DGP said.
According to police, Deka had allegedly distributed the question paper among some candidates before the examination and a long list of candidates who got the paper has already come to light. Police is also investigation the link between PK Dutta and Diban Deka.
