Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join the students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati as the chief guest for their Convocation programme on September 22.

The premier institute will host their convocation virtually this year keeping in mind the safety concerns owing to the ongoing pandemic.

Along with the chief guest, union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal and Sanjay Dhotre, mininster of state for education will be the guests of honour and chief minister of the state Sarbananda Sonowal have been invited as a special guest.

Dr Rajiv I Modi, chairman, board of governors, IIT Guwahati, and Prof TG Sitharam, director, IIT Guwahati, are also expected to be present during the event.

IIT Guwahati will host their convocation programme on September 22

The event will broadcast live on digital platforms such as YouTube and Facebook.

“The Institute has created a virtual reality-based award distribution where one can experience an avatar of the recipient of the award collecting a medal from Director’s own avatar surrogating him, from the comfort of their home,” said in a press statement released by the institution regarding the preparations for the upcoming convocation programme.

The press release also added, “the Institute has also created a photo-booth, with an option of different backgrounds, for students to take pictures at some selected locations on the campus. IIT Guwahati’s faculty and students have developed a telepresence module for a virtual visit to the Institute.”.

IIT Guwahati established in 1994 has completed 25 years and will be conducting its 22nd convocation programme this year. At present, the Institute has eleven departments and five inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines and offers undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes.
