Gauhati University to issue new SOP to hold final examinations

Examination for postgraduate students to be held via online mode and undergraduate examinations in both online and offline modes

Guwahati: Given the current pandemic, the registrar of Gauhati University (GU) has issued a new notification for conducting final examinations for postgraduate and undergraduate students of the university. The notification stated that examinations for postgraduate students will be held via online mode and undergraduate examinations will be conducted in both online and offline modes.

The GU management will soon release a new standard operating procedure (SOP) for this new system of conducting exams.

Vice president of Gauhati University of Students Union (GUSU) Lakhyajit Das had previously pleaded to the university management to take decisions in view of the best interests of the students. While speaking to EastMojo, he says "Finally after a lot deliberation that the vice-chancellor has listened to our plea for conducting exams in online and offline mode and welcome this new course of action taken up by the administration."

Earlier on September 8, an envoy of All Assam Students Union (AASU) headed by its president Dipankar Kumar Nath met with the Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University (GU), professor Pratap Jyoti Handique to plead the university administration to conduct an 'open book examination' via both online and offline modes for considering the risks of the pandemic. The envoy also requested for relaxation of the curriculum to ease pressure on the students.

AASU, Gauhati University unit had presented a memorandum to the vice-chancellor of the university to revamp the mode of conducting exams that are scheduled to be held from September.

"We welcome the University's initiative towards conducting exams for undergraduate and postgraduate students. But ever since the announcement there has been a lot of speculation and uncertainty amongst the student community," stated the student body in the memorandum.

Citing the current situation in Assam with cases rising regularly, the Gauhati cell of AASU mentioned, "There has been an alarming rise in the number of deaths. the situation has become so dire that beds have been scarce in many hospitals."

In the memorandum addressed to the vice-chancellor, the student's body had proposed a dual system for conducting exams asking to offer both online and offline mode for students to appear."In the backdrop of the current situation, Gauhati University should conduct open book examination offering both the online and offline mode to the students to either appear from home or examination centers based on their convenience."
