Assam couple behind domestic child help "torture" arrested from Nagaon

The couple from Dibrugarh, accused of assaulting a minor and pouring boiling water on him, were on the run for the last five days

Tinsukia: The prime accused, wanted for causing burn injuries and assaulting a minor domestic help kept illegally in Dibrugarh, have been arrested from Assam's Nagaon district on Saturday evening.

The couple, doctor Siddhi Prasad Deori and his wife Mitali Konwar, principal of Moran College, were on the run since past five days.

Confirming the development, superintendent of Dibrugarh police Prateek Thube said, "we were tracking the husband and wife for the last five days and kept an eye on various places where they might go including the high court. Today, we received a tip about the couple planning to move from Guwahati to upper Assam."

"Later, the source helped us with the vehicle number (AS 06Y 3839) in which they were travelling, and we laid a trap with the help of Nagaon police," Thube said, adding, "In the evening, the vehicle was intercepted at Raha, and they were arrested."

Thube said, "The accused are being brought to Dibrugarh. Once they reach, we will interrogate them and connect the dots."

The 13-year-old boy, was engaged illegally to wash 5 cars and take care of their dogs since April 2019. He sustained burn injuries at his neck and back after his employer doctor Siddhi Prasad Deori, formerly with Assam Medical College & Hospital, allegedly poured hot water on him while he was sleeping on the floor on August 27.

The case came to light after the Child Welfare Committee, Dibrugarh, rescued him with the help of childline and police on August 29.

"Later, the committee recorded statement of the minor and filed a police complaint on August 31 against doctor Deori and his wife," Arpana Borah, member of the committee, said.

According to sources, police had registered a case under section 344, 326, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code and started an investigation but found the prime accused and other family members absconding.

A couple of days later, police arrested their son Priyangsu Pratim Deori. He was hiding with a friend on the outskirts of Dibrugarh town, and one of their daughters Upasana Deori, was arrested when she was attempting to sneak into another district. "However, the couple was on the run prompting police to conducts raids at multiple places including Jorhat and Guwahati," the source added.
