Guwahati: In a moment of pride for the people of Assam, a total of 29 Assam police personnel and six fire and emergency services officials were conferred with the 'Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Outstanding Service' on the occasion of 74th Independence Day on Saturday.

The award is usually given to police personnel based on their gallantry achievements ever year. This year, however, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the havoc caused by the floods, police and emergency service professionals went the extra mile to help mitigate problems experienced by the common people.

A total of five IPS officials were conferred with the prestigious award in the state this year.

“Frankly speaking, for me it was a pleasant surprise and I was not expecting this at all,” Dhubri SP Anand Mishra told EastMojo. Mishra was the SP of Charaideo and was recently transferred to Dhubri.

Shwetank Mishra, who took over from Anand Mishra in Charaideo, too, told EastMojo about the “absolute surprise” when his nomination came. “I only came to know about my nomination when I was filing up the verification form which is required to be done by the recipient of this medal,” he said.

According to Anand, medals such as these are conferred to a consistent performer of the year. Here, the performer would stand for the achievements and Charaideo police is not short of it as well. From apprehending five hardcore senior ULFA (I) cadres and a huge amount of arms and ammunition to closing cases in Gujarat and Tripura to the help provided during the COVID-19 lockdowns in the form of food and medicine deliveries, the district police did them all.

“Awards such as these are also not only dependent on the number of gallantry achievements that one gathers during their tenure but also depend on the kind of relations one makes with the public that we swore to protect,” added Anand.
