Assam: Ahead of Independence Day, arms, ammunition seized in Udalguri
Guwahati: Based on intelligence inputs, Guwahati police and Udalguri district police jointly conducted a search operation at different locations in Udalguri district under Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) on Thursday night and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition.
The police team recovered five AK-56 rifles, two AK-47 rifles, two M-16 rifles, one airgun, seven 9 mm pistols, 23 magazines, five 36 hand grenades, five HE bombs, seven 40 mm grenades, 166 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 300 rounds of .303 ammunition, 79 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 200 numbers of detonator caps, 20 striker springs and 20 kg explosives.
Sources in Assam Police said that the huge recovery of arms and ammunition assumes significance as six banned rebel groups of the Northeast have already called for boycott on 74th Independence Day celebrations on Saturday.
“These arms and ammunition were kept under the ground at Udalguri district. The Assam Police team during the operation was headed by SP Rajmohan Rai,” it added.
