Guwahati: A day after All Assam Students' Union (AASU) made the confidential Clause 6 report Of Assam Accord public, state health and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the new state assembly should ratify the definition of 'Assamese'.

The clause 6 committee has recommended 1951 as a cut-off to define who is Assamese, and thus entitled to constitutional benefits.

Earlier in the year, when the committee handed over its reports to the state government, to be further handed over to the Union ministry of home affairs, even then the minister had said that it will be better if the next new state assembly can take up the issue. As the current government will go to polls in 2021, so it won't have adequate time to debate and discuss it.

Himanta also called out AASU on playing politics. He said that AASU has now become a political party. Earlier, it was a non-political organization, but now they are doing politics as the elections are approaching.
