Guwahati: Hailing the National Education Policy (NEP) as a historic decision, Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a 40-member committee will be formed for recommendations of implementing the policy in Assam.

Addressing a press meet on Saturday at Janata Bhavan, Sarma said, "State government is going to constitute a 40-member committee under the Principal Secretary of education. They will be further divided into sub groups as per the recommendation of NEP. They will prepare a blueprint on how to implement NEP in Assam, hopefully by December 31."

The committee will start functioning in the next 7 days, added the minister.

The new policy aims at overhauling the educational structure in the country. It advocates for new 5+3+3+4 school curriculum, covering children in the age group of 3-18 years. It aims for universalization of education from pre-school to secondary level with 100% GER in school education by 2030.

The new NEP advocates for a 5+3+3+4 school curriculum for children from the age of 3-18 years. The first groups for 3-8 years will be the foundational stage, followed by preparatory stage for 8-11 year olds, for 11-14 year olds it will be middle stage, and for 14-18 year olds, it will secondary stage.

The new policy brings pre-school education for children of ages 3 to 5 under the ambit of formal schooling. The mid-day meal programme will be extended to pre-school children. Also, students until Class 5 should be taught in their mother tongue or regional language.

Regards degrees, the term has been changed to 4 years. If students wishes to leave after studying for 1 year, they will get a certificate; if they wish to leave after 2 years, they'll get diploma; students who wish to leave after 3 years will get a degree, and on completion of 4 years course, they will get degree + research.
