Assam: Floods claim 2 more lives; death toll touches 87

Guwahati: Another two people died in Assam floods in the last 24 hours, taking the state's total flood-related toll to 87.

One of deceased is from Raha in Nagaon district, another is form Morigaon. Combined with 26 deaths in the rain-triggered landslides, 113 people have died so far.

According to the flood report by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 24 lakh people in 24 districts of Assam remain affected by floods. Goalpara district is the worst hit with 4,58,020 people bearing the brunt of the rising waters.

Further, 44,498 people are sheltered in 276 relief camps. In the last 24 hours, 115 boats were delpoyed and 869 persons were evacuated.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited several relief camps today, and has directed officials to to take necessary measures on war-footing, and to provide immediate aid.

Across Assam, Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger mark in Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Goalpara and Dhubri; Dhansiri in Golaghat; Jia Bharali in Sonitpur; Kopili in Nagaon; Gaurang in Kokrajhar; Kushiyara in Karimganj and Sankosh in Dhubri.

Meanwhile, in Kaziranga National Park, 116 animals have died due to floods and 143 animals have been rescued as per the latest update from ASDMA.
