Directed by award-winning director Samujjal Kashyap, ‘Maya Baidew’ officially gets nominated for Toronto Lift-Off Film Festival 2020
Guwahati: National award-winning director Samujjal Kashyap has put another feather in his directorial cap as his fictional short film Maya Baidew is now nominated for the “Short Live Action Narratives” category in the Toronto Lift-Off Film Festival 2020.
The festival, which is set to happen virtually on August 2, 2020, officially nominated the short film. Speaking with EastMojo, Kashyap, who is also the director of the film, said, “Recognition is something that we all aim for, this proves that yes we did something.”
Kashyap said that the film is based on a real-life incident that he encountered. “We used to have a housemaid whose character and the incident of her own life became the central theme for the story,” he said. The movie revolves around a small lower-middle-class family trying to make both ends meet. The husband is a small-time painter while the protagonist Maya works as a housemaid. Their only teenaged son lends a helping hand to his father during his college vacations. Crisis hits the family when the father-son duo is picked up by the police on suspicion of theft. A distressed but unrelenting Maya moves from pillar to post to get them back home and she finally succeeds. However, a shocking revelation in the tale heralds an impending storm lurking over the family.
“The film has a certain message which we wanted the audiences to focus on and so nominations as such provides the much-needed boost for the people to actually stream the movie once it comes out online,” the director added.
The film is written and directed by Kashyap himself with Pramod Das as the producer, Raja Baruah as the DOP (Director of Photography), music by Harjeet Diaz under the Kadambari production house. “What’s most interesting is that 70-80% of the actors in the film are non-actors,” said an elated Kashyap.
The film has already got national recognition in the form of “Best Regional Short Film” in the 6th Rajasthan International Film Festival in 2019. It even got official selection in the 9thh Kolkata Shorts International Film Festival 2020 and 10thh Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival 2020.
