Assam human rights body expresses concern over mob lynching cases

Kokrajhar: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has expressed serious concern over the increasing number of mob-lynching cases in the state and has vowed to settle the cases early to put a brake on the menace.

A two-member delegation of the AHRC, led by its chairperson Justice T Vaiphai and member Deva Kumar Saikia, arrived in Kokrajhar on Thursday and visited the district jail and quarantine centres in the area.

During their visit, the AHRC team interacted with inmates of jail and the quarantine centres and took stock about the basic facilities, including food, living standard of inmates inside the jail and the quarantine centres. They also interacted with officers concerned associated with the management of the jail and the centres.

Interacting with media persons, AHRC member Saikia said that the commission members have been checking and taking stock about the present situation of district jails and quarantine centres across the state these days.

“Many complaints have been received over irregularities in maintaining jails and quarantine centres across Assam. Proper facilities, including food, lodging, etc, must be given to the inmates in proper way during their stay,” he said.

Expressing serious concern over the number of mob lynching cases in Assam, Saikia said that stern steps are being taken against the culprits to put a brake on the social menace. He also stressed on the need of early settlement of such cases.

The AHRC is working dedicatedly towards building a healthy society, he added.
