Ace sprinter of India Hima Das nominated for Khel Ratna award while boxer Lovlina Borgohain is nominated for Arjuna Award from the state of Assam

Guwahati: 2018 recipient of Arjuna Award, India’s ace sprinter Hima Das has now been nominated for the prestigious Khel Ratna award, India’s highest sporting honour. Additionally, boxer Lovlina Borgohain has also been nominated for Arjuna Award by the state government on Monday.

The state’s sports secretary Dulal Chandra Das has sent a letter of recommendation to the union Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry on June 5, proposing Das’s name for the Khel Ratna award and Borogohain’s name for the Arjuna Award.

20-year-old Das will be one of the youngest nominees for Khel Ratna this year and will be competing for the highest sporting honour with star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, cricketer Rohit Sharma, paddler Manika Batra, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, and women's hockey captain Rani Rampal.

Hima is also India's first track competitor to win a worldwide title at U20 World Championship in Tampere, Finland in 2018 and lined it up with 400m silver, 4X400 mixed relay gold, and woman 4X400m gold at the Jakarta Asian Games. She also grabbed the 200m gold in Poznan Athletics Grand Prix in Poland in 2019 and 200m gold at the Kladno Athletics Meet in the Czech Republic.

23-year-old Borgohain hailing from Golaghat is the second boxer from the state to represent the country after Shiva Thapa and also the first woman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics. She clinched the gold at the 1st India Open International Boxing Tournament which was held in New Delhi and also bagged the silver medal at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament which was held in Guwahati. She also clinched the bronze medal at the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships which was held in Ulan-Ude, Russia.
