GMC fixes mutton price within Guwahati at Rs 650 per kg

Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has fixed the mutton price in areas within its jurisdiction at Rs 650 per kilogram.

In a letter (bearing no: GMC/JC/PR/2020/14), the GMC announced that the decision was taken following a representation submitted to the GM commissioner by the Greater Guwahati Qureshi Meat Shoppers Association on Thursday.

“The Guwahati Municipal Corporation would like to inform the general public that w.e.f June 12, 2020, the mutton price will be Rs 650/- per kilogram instead of Rs 700/- per kg based on the representation submitted to Debajit Hazarika, commissioner, GMC by the Greater Guwahati Qureshi Meat Shoppers Association today,” the GMC letter said.

Meanwhile, the president of Greater Guwahati Qureshi Meat Shoppers Association, Muslim Ali, has welcomed the decision of the GMC and urged people not to pay additional amount of money to any meat seller of the city. He also requested the people to cooperate with both the association and GMC in this regard.

Earlier, alleging that majority of the meat vendors in Guwahati were violating government-approved norms, the GMC had requested the meat sellers to slaughter animals certifying antemortem and post-mortem examination from the corporation.

In a notification issued by the GMC said, “It has come to the notice of the Corporation that majority of the meat vendors are violating the norms laid down by the department while slaughtering animals and performing slaughter in their own premises as well as selling meat without following the procedures such as ante- and post-mortem examination from the GMC’s authorised veterinary doctors. Necessary action will be initiated against the defaulters.”

Urging the people to purchase meat only from the approved and licensed vendors only, the Corporation earlier added: The kind of act is a gross violation of Prevention of Cruelty to animal Act, 1960, The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001, Guwahati Municipal Corporation Slaughter-House Act, 2012 coupled with registration and licensing provisions in terms of the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006 among others.
