Actor Sonu Sood arranges special flight for Assam residents

Guwahati: Around 180 residents of Barak Valley in Assam, who were stranded in Mumbai due to COVID-19 lockdown, landed at Silchar Airport on Tuesday afternoon after Bollywood actor Sonu Sood arranged a special flight for their return journey.

Sources close to Sonu Sood quoted the actor as saying, “Many migrants who have got stuck here in Mumbai called me asking for help. I think it’s my responsibility to take care of them and it’s good that they are going back home tomorrow.”

The actor also reportedly said that he would be present in Mumbai airport to see off these people, the sources quoted him as saying, “Yes, I will be there in the airport to see off these people. I will share more details after the flight takes off tomorrow.”

Air India team will assist the Air Asia flight in Kumbhirgram Airport in Silchar as Air Asia doesn’t have a team at the airport.

Actor Sonu Sood is now becoming a known face in a very different arena, especially in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic. After distributing food, PPEs, and transporting lakhs of migrants back to their home states in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, the actor has now set up a toll-free number -- 18001213771 -- through which one can directly reach out to his team for any help.

The actor stated that he received thousands of calls and messages almost every day and that he and his family realised that he could very easily miss out on some people this way. He had earlier posted a video of his phone being flooded with calls and messages asking for help.
