Assam Governor breaks COVID lockdown rules to reach Kokrajhar: MP

Since no persons above 65 years, children below 10 years are allowed to move out as per lockdown rules, how can Governor, aged 77, travel to BTC, asks MP Biswajit Daimary

Kokrajhar: Governor of Assam Prof Jagadish Mukhi arrived in Kokrajhar on Tuesday morning amid objections raised by Member of Parliament Biswajit Daimary.

Speaking to media persons on Monday, Daimary -- a senior leader of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), which is also a partner in the ruling BJP-led government in Assam -- said that the restrictions imposed by the government due to COVID-19 should be equal for all and no one, be it a minister or a public figure, should be allowed to break the rules.

“Since no persons above the age of 65 years and children below the age of 10 years are allowed to move from one place to another as per lockdown restrictions, how can the Governor, aged 77, travel to the BTC?,” Daimary said.

Daimary, a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, was in news recently as he vehemently criticised Assam Governor’s decision to impose Governor’s rule in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), which was under BPF rule for over 15 years. He said that the imposition of Governor’s rule in BTC in Assam is unconstitutional.

Mukhi reached the district after 22 days of taking over the reins of BTC administration on April 28. The development took place after the expiry of the term of the Hagrama Mohilary-led BTC council on April 27.
