Senior journalist Wasbir Hussain is being considered as a ‘perfect’ candidate as of now by state BJP to counter Congress-AIUDF candidate Ajit Bhuyan, also a senior journalist, say sources
Guwahati: In a significant development, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to announce its third candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls on Thursday. The decision of the saffron party assumes significance as the Opposition parties on Wednesday formally nominated journalist Ajit Bhuyan for the third Rajya Sabha seat.
Sources in the BJP have informed EastMojo that four names are doing the rounds till the filing of this report. They are -- former president of the state unit of the party and former Union minister of state for Railways Rajen Gohain; former MP from Mangaldai Ramen Deka; vice-chairman of Assam State Housing Board (ASHB) and party spokesperson Subhash Dutta; and senior journalist and member of the High-Level Committee (HLC) on implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, Wasbir Hussain.
Husain is being considered as a “perfect” candidate as of now by the state unit of the party to counter Congress-AIUDF candidate Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, sources added.
During the last Lok Sabha polls, both Rajen Gohain and Ramen Deka were denied tickets by the party high command despite being standing MPs from constituencies like Nagaon and Mangaldai, respectively.
Going by the numbers, the BJP-led ruling alliance in Assam can easily win two of the three seats going to the polls.
Meanwhile, Bodoland People’s Front candidate and joint nominee of the ruling NDA, Biswajit Daimary, filed his papers on Wednesday. BJP has already announced former RS member Bhubaneswar Kalita as its candidate for the second RS seat.
Elections to the three RS seats of the state are scheduled for March 26.
