Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday announced Biswajit Daimary as the NDA candidate for the ensuing Rajya Sabha elections in Assam.

Daimary, two-times Rajya Sabha MP and a BPF member filed his nomination papers at Assam Legislative Assembly. He was accompanied by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP state president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary among others.

Announcing the BPF member's candidature Sarma said that BJP has lived up to its commitment. Further, the minister took a dig at senior journalist Ajit Bhuyan's candidature as the consensus candidate for Congress and AIUDF. He said some eminent personalities in Assam joined the protest against Citizenship Amendment Act simply to gain a ticket for the Rajya Sabha elections.

He said if anyone can align with AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, then there is not much to be said or understood about the person, and his concerns for the interest of the state. It also shows how much real or fake are his intentions, added the minister.

Assam has 7 seats in the Upper House of Parliament of which 3 are with held by NDA members, 2 with Congress and 2 are lying vacant. The Rajya Sabha polls will take place on March 26.
