Guwahati: The rate of registered unemployed youths in Assam has drastically increased by 73,077 from 2016 to 2019 (till June), informed Chandra Mohan Patowary, skill, employment and entrepreneurship development minister, on Thursday.
Replying to a question by Sarupathar MLA Roselina Tirkey during the ongoing Budget Session of Assam Legislative Assembly, Patowary said that till June 2019, the total number of registered unemployed youths in Assam was 17,15,759.
Up to 2016, the number of registered unemployed in the state was 16,42,718, while in 2017 there was an increase of around 13,000 youths, taking the total to 16,65,866. In 2018, the total figure of registered unemployed youths spiked by around 34,000 taking the total to 16,99,977 and till June 2019, the total figure was at 17,15,759.
The state government has implemented a number of schemes for such youths like economic upliftment of weavers, handloom cluster development program, handloom model village, income generation intervention to weavers, national handloom development programme, SAMARTH and setting up of integrated handloom park in Kaziranga.
Also, to hone the skills of unemployed youth, the state government initiated placement linked skill training programme, PMKVY-2.0, among several others.
