Over 3,000 LP schools in Assam with only 1 teacher: Himanta

Guwahati: In Assam, there are 3,085 lower primary (LP) schools with just one teacher, and 23 upper primary schools in the same criteria, said state education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while replying to a question by MLA Utpal Dutta on the second day of the Budget Session of Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Among the districts, West Karbi Anglong has 245 LP schools with a single teacher, followed by Karbi Anglong with 225 such schools, Udalguri with 224, and Kamrup-Rural with 207.

Further, in Assam, a total of 16,387 teachers posts are lying vacant for LP and upper primary schools, with Cachar district having 1,799 vacancies, the highest, followed by Karimganj (1,389), Dhubri (1,304), Lakhimpur, Hailakand and Morigaon, with over 1,000 vacancies in each.

Meanwhile, in high schools and higher secondary schools, 17,909 teacher posts are lying vacant. However, the education minister stated that process is on for recruitment for these posts.

Also, replying to the number of LP schools and high schools amalgamated due to lack of students, 249 LP and MES have been amalgamated. While Chirang has the highest number of such school amalgamation at 76, it is followed by Sivasagar (35), and Jorhat (30). Also, one LP school in Kamrup (Metropolitan) has also been amalgamated due to shortage of students.
