Guwahati: Putting all speculations to rest regarding the number of deaths during the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) stir in state, the Assam government on Monday announced that while three persons died in police firing, another two were killed by miscreants during the stir which started on December 11, 2019 till date.

Announcing this during the inaugural day of the Assam Legislative Assembly session on Monday, Assam parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary -- on behalf of Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal, who also holds the home portfolio -- said that a total of three persons -- Sam Satafford from Guwahati; Abdul Aalim from Barpeta and Ishwar Nayak from Udalguri districts -- were killed during police firing at separate CAA protest incidents from December last year till date.

The minister was responding to a question raised by senior member of the House and Patacharkuchi MLA Pabindra Deka.

“The state government has not announced any compensation for the dead and injured people during CAA protest across the state. However, a high-level magisterial inquiry into the CAA protests killing has been ordered by the state authorities,” the minister said.

Meanwhile, the state home minister while replying to queries raised by Opposition Congress party MLA, Rekibuddin Ahmed, in the House informed that at least two people -- Dipanjol Das from Kamrup (Rural) and Ajijur Rahman from Darang districts -- lost their lives by miscreant attacks during CAA protests in December last year.

Revealing the number of injured persons during CAA protests in Assam, the minister concerned also informed that nearly 48 civilians and 55 security personnel were injured in violence across the state till date.

Interestingly, the state home minister, in another reply, said that a total of 430 cases were registered and 573 people were arrested for various law and order violation cases during CAA protests across Assam till date. He, however, mentioned that out of the total arrests, nearly 384 persons were released on bail while the rest 189 persons have been lodged at separate jails across the state.
