Guwahati: State finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's bike rally in Nazira to prepare a master plan for road improvement resulted in a law and order situation on Friday. The sitting Cong MLA Debabrata Saikia tried to halt the rally asking for accountability of the state on the long pending demand of improvement of road conditions.

The rally was meted with sloganeering like ‘BJP go back’, and ‘Himanta Biswa Sarma go back’.

MLA Saikia, in a letter to Sivasagar deputy commissioner, said: "I have come to know that no prior permission was taken from the civil administration or police to organise this motorcycle rally which is bound to cause considerable inconvenience to common people, including students appearing in the HSLC examination."

He said that in the guise of inspecting roads, the huge gathering will pass through or congregate near schools and adjoining roads, thereby hampering the studies of those appearing for HSLC. Also, the MLA added that "most of the motorcyclists who are gathering to participate in the rally have violated Motor Vehicles Act by not wearing helmets" and accordingly they must be penalised.

Along with Sarma, BJP MP Topon Kumar Gogoi, MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and MLA Joogen Mohan, along with thousands of BJP supporters, joined the 35-km-long bike ride.
