The accused was part of gang involved in looting and killing Om Prakash Agarwal in Dibrugarh while he was returning home on his motorcycle in November last year
Tinsukia: The Dibrugarh police have arrested a man for his alleged involvement in the dacoity and killing of Om Prakash Agarwal in November last year.
The arrested person has been identified as Ebad Ali alias Amin, 20, a resident of Dibrugarh.
Speaking with EastMojo, additional superintendent of Dibrugarh police Padmanabh Baruah said that based on source-based information, the police arrested Ali from his Paltan Bazar residence on Saturday. "We have credible information and evidence of his involvement in the crime,” he further said.
Although he was arrested on Saturday, the police shared the information with journalists only on Monday, in order to carry follow-up operations discretely so that other accused could be nabbed.
According to Baruah, the accused has confessed to the crime. "The motive behind the incident was money and it was a gang of 3 to 4 criminals under play," he said.
"According to him, they found around Rs 2 lakh from the bag snatched from the victim after shooting him. However, the money is yet to be distributed among them," Baruah said, adding, “Ali’s role in another murder that took place in Dibrugarh in 2018 has come to light.”
Baruah said, "We produced him before the magistrate and took him on 5-day police remand. We are interrogating him to unearth the entire gang."
In November last year, unknown miscreants had shot Agarwal and looted away the cash he was carrying while returning home in his motorcycle. A case under Section 302/34 was registered and investigation was started.
"The investigating team is yet to recover the weapon used in the crime and the cash snatched as of now," a source added.
