National Girl Child Day observed in Guwahati, achievers honoured

6 achievers including Shivangi Sarma -- who got 5 medals for Assam in Khelo India Youth Games -- & 3 girls from Kamrup (M) district recognised to mark occasion

Guwahati: In Assam, out of the 33 districts, 30 districts have sex ratio at birth of more than 925, said Hemen Das, secretary, social welfare department, during the celebration of National Girl Child Day (NGCD) at Srimanata Sankaradev International Auditorium in Guwahati on Friday.

Das also raised concern that juron (kind of a dowry) which is traditionally given by the groom's family to the bride in Assamese culture is now witnessing a reverse trend.

The District Administration & District Social Welfare Office, Kamrup Metropolitan District celebrated Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Week from January 20 to 26 this year on the occasion of National Girl Child Day. As a part of celebrations, several women achievers and three infant baby girls were honoured.

Shivangi Sarma, winner of five medals in swimming in the recently held Khelo India Youth Games 2020, was felicitated along with five others as women achievers for NGCD 2020. Girl toppers in HSLC and HSSLC exam in 2019 of government schools, 11 already identified BBBP local champions of different ICDS project of the district and students who participated in school level competitions on BBBP theme were awarded.

An oath-taking ceremony of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao was also led by Sarma.

Interacting with media, the chief guest of the event, Pramila Rani Brahma, Assam's social welfare minister, said, "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao mission is for the cause that girl child should be given all the rights and the society should know the value of a girl child. If we want our society to develop, we will have to give the basic educational rights to girl child."

Kunjalata Lachon, district social welfare officer, Kamrup (M) and Nodal officer, BBBP said, "through the scheme of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, we in Kamrup district are working on how we can educate the girls."

Stickers and posters spreading awareness about women helpline number -181 and One Stop Centre were also launched by the state social welfare minister. These stickers will be pasted on city buses, railway berths, cabs to raise awareness among the girls and women.

"We are trying to build a discrimination-free region," added Lachon, district social welfare officer, Kamrup (M).

Several other dignitaries including Devola Devi Das, Director, Social Welfare, Assam; Bidyut Bikash Bhagawati, ACS, ADC I/C Social Welfare, Kamrup (M) and Niva Das, Jt. Director, Social Welfare and Officials of the Social Welfare Department and Education Department of the District were present at the event.

National Girl Child Day is observed on January 24 every year. It was started by the ministry of women and child development in 2008 to raise awareness about inequalities a girl child faces in India.
