The 11th-12th century Surya sculpture was found by workers while digging land for construction of new building within Cotton University premises in Guwahati on Wednesday
Guwahati: A centuries-old Surya sculpture has been recovered from the premises of Cotton University in Guwahati, Assam on Wednesday.
Manzil Hazarika, head of department of archaeology of the university, confirmed about the recovery.
Speaking with EastMojo, Hazarika said that the sculpture was found by workers while digging land for construction of a new building within the university premises.
According to Hazarika, based on the art style, the sculpture tentatively belongs to 11th to 12th century. He added that the sculpture of Surya is almost a complete one with his mukut (crown), consorts, two full-blown lotuses, and his rath (chariot) of seven horses in place.
Preliminary cleaning of the relic will be undertaken by the university, and the antique item will also be registered.
The state archaeology has been intimated about the discovery, added Hazarika.
