Guwahati: As boxing events have kickstarted in the ongoing 3rd Khelo India youth Games 2020 on Thursday, Assam's boxing chief coach Amar Deka has expressed hope for the state's contingent to win many medals in the third edition of the competition.

“We are very confident that this time Assam will produce good results in boxing. Last time, we won three medals in the competition. This time, we have 35 boxers participating in the tournament, so we are hoping for a lot of medals. Let's see what happens," Deka was quoted as saying by Khelo India.

The state has already produced India's top boxers Jamuna Boro, Bhagyabati Kachari and Lovlina Borgohain. However, Assam's chief boxing coach is worried that he hasn't spent enough time with the athletes ahead of the tournament.

Expressing concern, Deka said, though the boxers are physically fit and mentally tough, there is a lack of boxing infrastructure in their hometown. "I wish we could have trained a little longer with each of the boxers then they would have become better athletes," he added.

Apart from the pressure to perform well, the state is also hosting the third edition of the ongoing youth games. Hence, as the host team, there are seen as someone who is more likely to win as they were trained or got to practice on the ground before other contesting states and Union Territories could.
