Tinsukia: The disappearance of five youths from Assam's Tinsukia district amid massive resentment among local people against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) has set off alarm bells among security forces.

The development comes at a time when two youths had already gone missing in the last 10 days. The youths were identified as Biju Gogoi from Tinsukia district and Gyandeep Borpatra Gohain from neighbouring Dibrugarh district.

Sources confirmed that Gohain has joined ULFA(I), while it is suspected that Gogoi has also joined the outfit.

Speaking with EastMojo, Tinsukia SP Shiladitya Chetia said that the police received information about the disappearance of five youths from Panitola in the district. "They went missing four days ago,” Chetia added.

The five youths have been identified as Dimpu Gogoi, Champakjyoti (23), Priyank Gogoi (23), Dichanka Gogoi (22) and Jintu Dowara (26). All of them are residents of Panitola village and most of their phone numbers are switched off.

"We are contacting their relatives and friends to trace their whereabouts. However, we are yet to trace them so far,” said Chetia adding: “We are also exploring possibilities of them joining ULFA-I.”

In the meantime, sources in intelligence agencies have confirmed that Gohain, who went missing from Dibrugarh district earlier, has joined ULFA-I. He was guided to the banned outfit's camp in Myanmar through Mon district in Nagaland.

Confirming the development, Dibrugarh SP Sreejith T, said, "It has been corroborated that Gohain has joined ULFA-I. The youths have gone missing and joining ULFA-I has become a serious concern," a senior official in an intelligence agency told EastMojo.

Panitola was one of the worst violence-hit places during anti-CAA protests in the state. Protesters had set Panitola railway station on fire, torched Panitola gaon panchayat office and post office besides damaging Panitola railway crossing gate, etc.
