Guwahati: As the special session of Assam legislative assembly was undergoing its proceedings at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati on Thursday, several members of an influential student organisation, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), with support from the All Assam Students’ Organisation (AASU) held a five-hour sit-in demonstration against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Starting at 10 in the morning on Monday, the sit-demonstration held in Dispur in Guwahati witnessed large participation of AJYCP members, who were also joined later by AASU leaders Sammujal Kumar Bhattacharya and Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, among others. Assamese actress Barsha Rani Bishaya also took part in the demonstration.

Speaking with EastMojo, AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai informed that the students’ organisation is pressing on a three-point demand in front of the state government keeping in view the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act pressed upon by the Central government on the people of Assam.

Pointing out their demands, Changmai revealed that AJYCP demands the state government to bring out a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at the ongoing special session of Assam assembly on Monday.

Speaking on their long-pending demands, Changmai said that AJYCP urges the state government to immediately implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Assam considering the increasing threat of illegal influx faced by the state over the years.

Moving on to their last demand, Changmai expressed that AJYCP demands the Assam Legislative Assembly to take up a resolution ensuring that all clauses of the Assam Accord are being followed and implemented word by word.

Sharing views on the state government’s decision to call for a one-day special session just a day ahead of Assamese Bhogali (Magh) Bihu, another AJYCP leader expressed that people of Assam are hopeful that a strong resolution against CAA will be provided by the state assembly in the special session held on Monday.

“A strong resolution against CAA is expected to be proposed by the state assembly in its session today and it should be done so that the Central government is cleared upon that people of Assam will never accept this contentious act,” he added.

Earlier on December 30 last year, Assam government announced for holding a special session of the state assembly for a day on January 13, 2020 in order to discuss issues and concerns of the people related to the contentious CAA. The decision was also taken after Opposition Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) had separately appealed the state Assembly Speaker, Hitendra Nath Goswami, to call for a special session in order to discuss upon the concerns expressed by the people of the state on the embroiling citizenship issue.
