Guwahati: Picture of a 12-year-old girl injured by an arrow on her shoulder, allegedly during the practice session of Khelo India Youth Games 2020, are doing rounds on the internet.

However, on fact-checking, it was found that the claims are incorrect. The young archer got injured during a regular practice session in Dibrugarh, not during Khelo India Youth Games 2020 practice session taking place in Guwahati, which is over 450 km from Chabua.

The games are taking place for the first time in Guwahati from January 10-22.

Speaking with EastMojo, Navajyoti Basumatary, secretary of Archery Association of Assam, said that the incident took place during a regular training session at Chabua in upper Assam's Dibrugarh district.

Basumatary also released a statement which said, “Shibangi Gohain, the injured archer of Chabua belongs to SAI TRAINING center. She is not a DSYW trainee.”

“SAI is responsible as there was no in-charge or caretaker during the training session. The incharge AC Marcy was gone on duty to Khelo India,” he added.

However, on Twitter, the image of the injured girl, Shivangi Gohain is being circulated with the claims that the incident took place during Khelo India practice session. A user wrote: "Shivangini Gohain #Assam seriously injured in Archery practice #KheloIndiaYouthGames2020. Are we actually maintaining all safety measures during such games?"

To further clarify where and when the incident took place, EastMojo contacted the PRO of Khelo India Youth Games 2020, Lakhya Konwar. He too said that the incident took place on Thursday]at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) academy in Chabua, Dibrugarh.

Konwar added that the archer is not part of Khelo India Youth Games.

Talking about medical facilities provided to the young archer, the PRO said that for better treatment, the girl will be taken to AIIMS, New Delhi by an afternoon flight on Thursday. He added that chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal is ensuring all possible help to the young archer.

Although the incident didn't take place during Khelo India practice session, it puts a big question on the safety of players at SAI academies.

SAI state president Subhash Basumatary could not be reached for comments.
