Gyandeep’s disappearance from Dibrugarh comes close on the heels of AASU leader Biju Gogoi going missing from Tinsukia; both suspected to have joined ULFA-I
Tinsukia: The disappearance of a 26-year-old youth, Gyandeep Borpatra Gohain, from Upper Assam's Dibrugarh district has set off alarm bells among security forces.
The development comes days after another youth from neighbouring Tinsukia district went missing, amid state-wide mass protests against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), and is suspected to have joined banned outfit ULFA-I.
Biju Gogoi, an office-bearer of AASU's 'aanchalik committee', had disappeared on January 3 this year.
Speaking with EastMojo, Dibrugarh SP Sreejith T said that Gohain remains untraced since January 4 this year. "We received his missing information from a civilian and the same was corroborated by security agencies at ground level," he said.
"It is suspected that he may have joined Ulfa (I) and police is trying to track him," Sreejith T said, adding, "Though originally from Chabua, Gohain used to stay at his father's quarter in Dinjan."
According to sources, Gohain's father, Pabitra Borpatra Gohain, is working as conservancy staff in station HQ of Dinjan military station since 1998 and his elder brother is employed as driver at HQ CCE (chief construction engineer) of the Army at Dinjan. "Gohain was good friends with Munna Boruah alias SS Lt Roop Asom of ULFA(I), nephew of Paresh Baruah, and it is likely that he has joined ULFA(I)."
His closeness with Munna Barua has been corroborated by an official of Assam Police.
"However, the outfit is yet to confirm whether the two youths joined ULFA(I)," sources added.
