Assam: ABSU office vandalised in Baksa, 2 detained

Miscreants enter ‘anchalik committee’ office of students’ union in Rupahi at 10.15 pm; destroy several items including 2-wheelers, TV, tables, chairs, documents, etc

Kokrajhar: At a when time residents were busy celebrating the onset of the new year, unidentified miscreants attacked and vandalised the Rupahi 'anchalik committee’ office of the All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) in Assam's Baksa district late on Tuesday night.

Sensation prevailed in the Rupahi area following the incident that left several properties and documents belonging to the students' union damaged and torched. The incident took place at Rupahi under Salbari police station around 10.15 pm on Tuesday, reports said.

According to the ‘anchalik committee’ members, a group of five to eight unknown miscreants entered the ABSU office in the night and vandalised several properties besides torching important items including TV, official documents, tables, chairs and two-wheelers, among others.

There were six office-bearers inside the office room when the miscreants entered the office and started attacking them. However, the members managed to escape through the window without any injuries. The miscreants also warned the office-bearers not to come out, or else face attacks.

Three two-wheelers, several important official files and materials were destroyed in the incident, said the members.

The ‘anchalik committee’ and locals of the area condemned the attack and demanded immediate identification of the culprits involved and punish them. So far, the reason behind the attack has not been ascertained. An FIR has been lodged with the police in this regard.

Police rushed the spot to take stock of incident and started their investigation into the incident. Later, the police detained two persons in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, in what has been alleged to be a retaliation to the attack, unknown people in large numbers from the area attacked the Rupahi primary youth office of the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) on Wednesday morning.

ABSU president Pramod Boro condemned the incident and demanded early identification of the culprits involved in it. He also expressed serious concern over the incident and said that the students' union was working for the uplift and welfare of society.

Boro demanded the district administration for strict measures against the incident. He also appealed all sections of society to maintain peace and tranquility in the region.
