Assam CAA stir: Man held over Dec 11 attack on Tinsukia DC office

Accused identified as Babul Purkayastha, a cable operator and owner of local news channel. He is also a working president of Congress youth brigade

Tinsukia: The police arrested a cable operator and owner of a local news channel on Monday allegedly in connection with the attack that took place on the office of deputy commissioner of Tinsukia in Assam on December 11, during a protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).

The accused has been identified as Babul Purkayastha. He is also a working president of the youth brigade of the Congress.

Speaking with EastMojo, Tinsukia SP Shiladitya Chetia said, "We have arrested Babul Purkyastha in connection with the attack on DC office. He has been produced before court which has sent him to judicial custody."

According to sources, this is the same case in which pro-talk Ulfa leader Jiten Dutta has been arrested. "More persons are likely to be arrested in this case," sources said.

On December 11, the day CAB was placed in Rajya Sabha, a massive protest took place outside the office of DC in Tinsukia. Thousands protesters gheraoed the office main gate and raised anti-CAB slogans. "The situation turned violent after protesters pelted stones on security forces. Security forces resorted to lathicharge, blank firing and fired rubber pellets to disperse the protests. Six persons were injured in the incident," a source added.
