Guwahati: Assam government has decided to hold a special session of the state assembly on January 13, 2020, for a day in order to discuss issues and concerns of the people related to the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) row.

As per reports, the one-day special session of the state legislative assembly, that is scheduled to start at 9.30 am, has been called by Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi.

Notably, earlier this month, Opposition Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) had separately appealed the state Assembly Speaker, Hitendra Nath Goswami, to call for a special session in order to discuss upon the concerns expressed by the people of the state on the recently enacted Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The winter session of the state assembly that kicked off on November 28, 2019, witnessed a heated argument from both sides and wound up just days ahead of the CAA being tabled in Lok Sabha for the second time by the BJP-led government in the Centre.

Assam has been on the boil for the past several days as thousands of people have come out on the streets to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. At least six persons lost their lives in police firing in Guwahati and other locations while protesting, besides several others including women getting critically injured and undergoing treatment in various hospitals.
